MENU

The Agenzia per il Patrimonio Culturale Euromediterraneo, in collaboration i with the Municipality of Lecce , the "Positivo Diretto" Cultural Association , the Polo Bibliomuseale della Provincia di Lecce and the Aps Nuova organizzazionCe islamica Salento, launches a call for selection for young artists attending fine Arts Academies and/or DAMS in Italy .

Call and application forms can be consulted and downloaded on the institutional website of the Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency - www.agenziaeuromed.it - in the section dedicated to the project, or by clicking directly on the link:

This initiative constitutes the first fundamental step in the project 'Creatures of Sand/The Arab Spring is not dead and may have to connect with the Western Spring' financed under the 'PUGLIA CAPITAL SOCIALE 3.0' call for proposals of the Apulia Region.

The title, "SAND CREATURES", derives from the novel The Sand Child by Tahar Ben Jellounm, which tells the vicissitudes of a woman who, for various reasons linked to a strongly patriarchal society, pretends to be a man for the rest of her life. In this particular historical moment, it intends to promote gender equality and the empowerment of Mediterranean women, through a combined path of promotion and dissemination of art, which is attributed the role of an inclusive tool, helping to welcome, refresh and cure.

The project addresses the issue of gender inequality, discrimination against women and sexist violence, and is developed through moments of creative action and collective reflection. Eight young artists - who meet the above-mentioned requirements - will be selected. They will have the opportunity to develop a project they have in mind or on which they are already working, to verify and compare it with Italian curators, teachers, experts, mediators, participating in artist residency at the “S. Castromediano” Museum in Lecce until they set up, guided by a designated curator, a collective exhibition of their unpublished works.

The phases of the project involving the selected young artists will be divided into four stages:

  •  An artist residency to be held in S. Castromediano Museum in Lecce, where the artists involved will have the opportunity to work on the conception and realization of works closely related to the theme. Maximum period: spring 2023. Duration: one week. Travel and accommodation costs shall be borne by the project and therefore by the Agency.
  •  Seminars and thematic talks by nationally renewed experts involving the artists and an audience of young students from the artistic high schools of the province of Lecce;
  • final exhibition, in which the works of the artists in residence will be exhibited A Catalogue, will collect the works created and the testimonies on the project;

In this way, the project will define and bring to fruition a process of both artistic and social awareness and education on human rights, fundamental not only for the eight artists but also for a significant representation of the Salento youth community, with the aim of enhancing the substantial role of art and culture as effective tools for defeating behavioural models of oppression established over the centuries.

THE PARTNERSHIP

The project integrates and connects the activities that the partner organisations and collaborators individually carry out on the theme of culture as a connection for new citizenship rights.

The Agenzia per il Patrimonio Culturale Euromediterraneo, the project leader, was set up precisely for this purpose and all the activities it has implemented over the years have been aimed at fostering exchange and dialogue between peoples.

The Positivo Diretto Association, working in the field of social and public arts, has promoted European projects of encounters and workshops between artists from all over Europe on the theme of intersecting lands, human paths, and solidarity landscapes.

The Polo Bibliomuseale di Lecce is lead partner or partner of projects that identify art as a vehicle for peace. Musei accoglienti, La bellezza dell'integrazione, Il Viaggio di Sindbad are just some of the latest implemented proiects.

The Municipality of Lecce has been accompanying these virtuous processes for years by providing prestigious initiatives aimed at enhancing social integration and active citizenship projects.

The N.O.I. Salento Association, as an expression of Lecce's Islamic community, regularly works to help the community live a healthy religion, free from any political or ideological influence, using intelligence in communicating difficulties and suffering, correcting evil with good.
